Chattahoochee Chorography

Chorography is a branch of geographical study that relates "...to the Description of a particular County or Province, wherein Natural History, and the particular Incidents of the Place are supposed to be recited."

The Chattahoochee Hill Country is a portion of the valley of the Chattahoochee River, located southwest of the city of Atlanta, in the southwest corner of Fulton County, extending into adjacent counties. The "hills" are undulations of the Georgia Piedmont, covered with terrace remnants and gullies, reminders of a time when the area was heavily farmed for cotton. Nowadays, the Hill Country is an island of rural tranquility amid the sprawl of the south Atlanta suburbs. Somehow, it has largely escaped the suburban sprawl so prevalent elsewhere around the city. At night, from my back door, I can still look up and see Orion's Belt, Jupiter, and Mars, and hear the wild calls of coyote packs. There are still hundreds of acres of woodlands, cow pastures, and streams flowing over outcrops of granite. And there are a couple thousand residents, recent immigrants and long-time families alike, hoping to guide the inevitable population growth in the area in ways that will minimize its impact on the landscape. There is a spirit of possibility here, of trying something new, of not giving in to the marketplace forces of "business as usual". It is a marvelous place to call home.
